In honor of the start of summer, I would like to share a special family recipe with you that we eat all summer long! (And really, all year long!) Growing up, my grandma always had the best intentions of introducing us to produce, but like most grandmas, she also always liked to feed us sweets. So we ended up with the best of both worlds: extra butter on the veggies, ice cream with fruit, and chocolate with nuts!
The One Fresh Strawberry Dessert that you Must Try!
My grandma’s specialty that she has always made for us is strawberries and ice cream, so I thought it would be fitting to have her be the one to demonstrate how to make them for all of you.
This is really a fresh strawberry dessert recipe that you cannot mess up. The directions are as follows:
Ingredients
- Strawberries
- Powdered Sugar
- Vanilla Ice Cream
(Even when fresh strawberries were not available at our local grocery store, she would buy the frozen strawberries that already have sugar included, but you could also buy plain frozen strawberries and add the sugar yourself.)
Instructions
- Cut the strawberries into bite size pieces.
- Pour powdered sugar onto the strawberries. There is no real specific amount of sugar to pour. Just pour, stir, taste and repeat until the strawberries taste sweet enough. (This will really be dependent on your taste preferences and what variety of strawberries you bought and how sweet they are naturally.)
- Place the cut strawberry mix in the fridge until it is time to eat.
- Pour the cut strawberries on top of vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
If you want to do a healthier version, skip the sugar or the ice cream! Please share your produce related indulgences this 4th of July and any easy summer produce recipes that you think others would enjoy!
Disclaimer: I originally posted this because I wanted to share a few of my Grandma’s recipes that revolved around produce, but it is also comical because they were always produce plus a lot of sugar or produce plus a lot of butter or mayonnaise! Anyways, this specific recipe has always been my favorite ever since I was little and I am so thankful that I took this video when I did. My beloved Grandma has since made her journey to heaven, and if you are reading this, I encourage you to get your mom/dad/grandma/aunt to write down all of your most cherished recipes for you to have to keep once they pass on.

I love this recipe, thanks Produce Nerd! As a dietitian, for a healthier alternative you can always freeze vanilla frozen yogurt as an alternative to ice cream. My current favorite is Siggy’s vanilla flavor. Love, love, love!
Hi Crystal, thank you for the comment and for the great suggestion!
