Cashew butter is one of the greatest things I have come across in some time! And, homemade cashew butter is even better! I really stumbled upon cashew butter in a local health food store, tried it, and just kept going back to buy it. Once I realized I was only returning to that store for the cashew butter, since none of my other local grocers carry it, I decided it was time to take things into my own hands!

Cashew Butter Ingredients
On the container of the cashew butter that I loved so much, there were only two ingredients: cashews and vegetable oil. So, I bought a container of unsalted cashews (if you like them salted, buy the salted kind) and had vegetable oil in the house to use. That is it, just those two ingredients.
Making Homemade Cashew Butter
The process is as follows:
- Add 3 cups of cashews to a food processor or mixer (I use this food processor)
- Blend them until they are chopped into small pieces. You can do it in intervals, where you add a bit at a time and blend, but that is only really needed if you are using a smaller mixer.
- Add 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. Don’t have vegetable oil? Switch it up and try another oil you have on hand. The only thing to remember is that nuts naturally have their own oil content, so the oil you add is mixing with the nut oil flavor and after some trial and error, you will find what you like best!
- Blend until it is as creamy or as chunky as desired. That is what is so great about making the cashew butter (or any nut butter, really) at home because you get to decide the end texture.
I received some questions regarding the nut to oil ratios, so I made this additional video to help you troubleshoot when you are at home making your own versions! But, it basically boils down to this: start out with the baseline above and if you want it creamier, slowly add in more oil and if you want it chunkier, slowly add in more cashews.
I am convinced I am on to something here because we are eating this up like crazy, making a new batch every 4-5 days or so, and my daughter, who would never touch the store-bought cashew butter is loving the homemade version!
How to Eat Cashew Butter
The simple answer would be to say that you could eat it just like any other nut butter, which is true. However, my three favorite ways to eat cashew butter are:
- Cashew butter on bread
- Cashew butter with apples
- Cashew butter spread on a heated tortilla (wrap it and eat it like a burrito)
My next attempt is to use it to try out homemade cashew butter cups!
How to Store Cashew Butter
Once you have prepared it, it needs to be sealed in an airtight container in the fridge.
Let me know if you try it!
