We are avid readers in our house, and spend hours reading a variety of books each week, both our own and an assortment from the library. And, for some reason, construction and construction site books are a big hit with both my daughter and son, so we’ve been through quite a bit of construction books!

Below, I have compiled a list of what we consider to be the best construction books for kids, both visually and content-wise.

Best Construction Books for Kids

Road Builders

I can’t even tell you how many times we’ve read this book! We are actually on our second copy of this book because the first one got so worn out! This book shows a construction crew working with the different road builders and explains in a basic way what each one does. This will also help your little one to learn how to identify each road builder as well.

Baby Builders / Bebes Constructores

This is a such a fun book! It’s about a crew of babies that are working on a construction site, and have some funny baby issues as they go. Even as my kids have gotten to school age, they still enjoy this book. The best part is that you can get it in English or a bilingual version in both English and Spanish.

Little Excavator

This book is written by the same author as the Llama Llama series and follows a smaller excavator trying to do all the stuff that the bigger road builders are doing, but just can’t yet (sound familiar?!)…until the perfect job comes along for him that none of the bigger excavators can do.

Brick by Brick

This is a heartwarming story about a dad who works as a bricklayer, and a little boy who is always wanting to be like his dad and to have a house of their own. At the end, the dad surprises the little boy with a new house that he built with his own hands. (This book is available in both English and Spanish via The Imagination Library books, but I can’t find it for purchase anywhere yet.)

Construction Site: Road Crew, Coming Through

There are a lot of books in the “Construction Site” series, but this one is our favorite. It is upbeat, has a fun rhythm while you read it and covers a range of road builders.

Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site

This is the construction site book that will put your kids (and maybe, you too) to bed! It covers the different road builders and what they need to do before “going to sleep.” The great part is that this book is also available in both English and Spanish.

Construction Site: Merry and Bright

This is a fun lift-the-flap book focused around the holidays the winter weather. The road builders come together to help decorate for Christmas, and your kids will love lifting the flaps as you read through.

Construction Site: Spring Delight

This is another great lift-the-flap book from the “Construction Site” crew, this time covering spring. It says it’s an Easter book on the cover, but it really just covers spring and all of the exciting stuff that comes when the seasons change from winter to spring, and then has some eggs hiding underneath the flaps on the last page.

Construction Site: Farming Strong, All Year Long

This book has the “Construction Site” crew, along with some new builders and diggers specific to farming, at the farm during the different seasons of the year to briefly detail what the crew needs to do throughout the year to keep the farm going.

20 Big Trucks in the Middle off Christmas

20 different types of trucks help the town set up for Christmas. And when the tree topper falls, they use one of the props from one of the trucks to save the day! This is definitely one for a little truck lover!

Diggers Love to Go to School!

This is our favorite diggers book from the series. This is a cute take on going to school, where the diggers are learning to count, the ABCs, patterns, colors, and more. My favorite part is actually the last page where you don’t know if the whole experience was actually with diggers or along for the ride with the little kids at school!

Busy Busy Construction Site

In this book, there are very few words to the actual story, but there are a lot of new “construction site” vocabulary for kids to learn. Along with that and the cute animal characters, your kids get to watch a building be built as the book progresses.

You Can Draw Construction Vehicles

This is a fun follow along book for the kids that are a little bit older (I would say starting around 4 years old). It’s a step-by-step book that teaches kids how to build the different vehicles.

I hope this was helpful and that you get the chance to read some of these with your little one, or to maybe gift to someone special!
