We are avid readers in our house, and spend hours reading a variety of books each week, both our own and an assortment from the library. So, I made a compilation of our favorite Christmas books, both religious and non-religious, to help you find some good Christmas books this year!
If you are solely looking for our favorite religious Christmas books, you can check out my specific post on that HERE.

Best Christmas Books for Kids
God Gave Us Christmas / La Navidad es un Regalo de Dios
This is such a great book that teaches children about the true meaning of Christmas. If you are religious, I highly recommend this book! Mama Bear spends the entire book showing Little Cub all of the magic that God has created in this world, and why God is more important than Santa. This book is available in both English and Spanish.
The Legend of the Candy Cane
You will never think of a candy cane the same again after reading this book! This is a magical, religious book that follows a man that comes to town and puts together a candy shop, that includes candy canes. Instead of them just being another candy, he compares them to being the shape of “J” for Jesus, as well as the same shape of a shepherd’s hook and uses it as a way to share the blessings/learnings of Jesus with others.
How Santa Got His Job
This is a Christmas book, unlike any I have ever seen! It is such a creative take on the concept of Santa and how he ended up with the job of Santa. It’s also a super fun read with the kids!
The Legend of the Poinsettia
This book tells the story of a religious family that is going to help prepare a blanket for baby Jesus for the Christmas mass. However, once the mom gets sick, the girl cannot finish the blanket by herself, and feels compelled to bring something, so she brings weeds, prays over them at church, and it turns the green weeds inside and outside the church into magical, flowering poinsettias! I am also pretty sure that one of the characters is angel-like!
Little Blue Truck’s Christmas / La Navidad del Camioncito Azul
If your kids are fans of the little blue truck, they will love this book! This covers the blue truck sharing Christmas trees and spreading joy to his animal friends throughout the Christmas season. Two great things about it: the last page lights up, and you can get it in both English and Spanish!
Merry Christmas, Daniel Tiger
This is a lift-the-flap book that is worth your time. It covers Daniel and his family during Christmastime, while his Grandpere comes to visit, and even shows everyone in the family being excited about receiving ONE gift for Christmas! It’s a great example for kids to see during the holiday season.
Christmas Time – It’s All About Jesus
A fun religious book to help teach your kids what Christmas is all about. There are lots of bright colors throughout the illustrations, and the book has a rhythm to it, so you can make your reading as enthusiastic as you would like it to be!
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Sleigh
If your kids love the pigeon, this is another great read! If they don’t know the pigeon yet, this will be a fun introduction to this character and how these fun books are written!
Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas
Fancy Nancy never disappoints! Not only does she find a way to make Christmas fancy and fun, but she also recovers when things don’t go her way. I also just love this character in general because she’s fun, gets excited about the small stuff, and there isn’t any bad behavior that you want your kids to copy!
Sounding Joy
This is a really fun, joyful Christmas book! It is religious, and compares the sound of joy today to the sound of joy back when Jesus was born, and reminds everyone why we celebrate the joy of Christmas each year. Also, the illustrations are really great, and the kids really gravitate towards the brighter colors!
5 Little Monkeys Looking for Santa
If your kids enjoy the 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed, the rest of the books in the series are even better, including this one! The 5 little monkeys have a whole adventure while they wait up trying to see Santa, and of course, fall asleep right before he gets there!
20 Big Trucks in the Middle of Christmas
20 different types of trucks help the town set up for Christmas. And when the tree topper falls, they use one of the props from one of the trucks to save the day! This is definitely one for a little truck lover!
Construction Site Merry and Bright
This is a very quality made lift-the-flap book that follows the road builders setting up for Christmas. At the end, the construction site is a winter wonderland!
The Berenstein Bears & the Joy of Giving
Just when Brother and Sister Bear save some extra money for themselves to get more presents for them instead of spending money on each other, they are reminded of what Christmas is really about. And by the end of the book, they decide to take that extra money they had saved for themselves and donate it.
The Berenstein Bears & the Christmas Angel
What starts out as playing in the snow and then building a snow angel turns into learning about angels and then leads into Christmas and the birth of baby Jesus. This is a relatable, religious Christmas book that keeps it fun for the kids.
Llama Llama Holiday Drama
This book is so spot on for how it is with kids (and parents) during the holidays! Little Llama is excited about all of the holiday prep and with helping, until it just gets to be too much and he’s just ready for Christmas to be here already! This has been a favorite that we return to often all year-round because it’s just so relatable, well-written and fun!
Llama Llama Holiday Helper
Llama Llama is a little bit older in this book and is helping Mama Llama set up, and once he finishes, decides to go and help out his friends and his grandparents as well. At the end, he and his friends all come together to exchange gifts. The best part: you can get this book is in both English and Spanish.
Llama Llama Secret Santa Surprise
Now that Llama Llama is a little older, he is getting to do a Secret Santa gift exchange with his friends at school. This book covers having patience, keeping a secret, thinking about others and things they would like, and celebrating with friends.
It’s Not Easy Being Santa Claus
This is a fun take on Santa’s job. He is worn out with all of his responsibilities and decides he needs a break from being Santa, so he goes and does these other jobs that remind him of being Santa or just don’t end up well, until he meets a little girl that is so enamored with the idea of Santa that he goes back to being “Santa” just to fulfill her wish!
Biscuit’s Christmas Eve
Biscuit and his friend are setting up for Christmas on Christmas Eve night, and of course, Biscuit gets all tangled up throughout the lift-the-flap story! This Biscuit book also has a little more substance than most of the Biscuit books.
Biscuit’s Pet & Play Christmas
If your kids are into textures, this is a fun Christmas book for them! On each page, there is a different texture to ‘touch and feel’, with the last page being a horse’s mane!
Angelina’s Christmas
Angelina and her mom and brother encounter a lonely older neighbor whose spirit they brighten, and even get him to bring out his Santa costume. By the end, it almost has the reader questioning if he is Santa!
The Christmas Gift / El Regalo de Dios
This Christmas story will pull on your heartstrings and really help to remind your children how lucky they are to just receive one gift at Christmas time, let alone more than one. I think this should be required reading for children during the holidays, when the reason for the season really gets stirred up.
I hope this summary helped. I know there are a lot of Christmas book offerings out there, but if you start with one or a few of these, I promise you’ll be on the right path!
